Arming from an LED Keypad:
If the Ready light is ON, the system is ready for arming. If the Ready light is OFF, check to see that all doors and windows are closed and that motion is stopped in areas covered by motion detectors. The system Cannot be armed unless the Ready light is ON indicating that all zones are closed and the system is in the Ready state.
Enter your [User code]. As each digit is entered, the keypad sounder will beep. If the access code was entered incorrectly, the keypad buzzer will sound steadily for two seconds. If this occurs, press the [#] key and re-enter your [User code]. If the correct access code is entered, the keypad sounder will beep quickly and the Armed light will come ON. Exit the premises through the door indicated by your installer as the Exit/Entry door.
The panel will provide an exit delay period, indicated by keypad beeps, for you to exit the premises without causing an alarm. At the end of the exit delay period, the Ready light will turn OFF and the system will be armed. The exit delay time can be changed by your installer.

We have a (rather outdated) PC5010 pre-installed at our house. It's been pre-wired and has 3 keypads all set up. The problem is that we are the third owners and we do not know the master code or the user codes. The system has the installer bypass enabled and I am trying to use the bypass to change the master code to set it up for our use. DSC uses LED codes to indicate trouble details for all keypads that don’t have an LCD readout display. The following applies to all PowerSeries panels, which include PC1616, PC1832, PC5010, PC5015 and others.
When this message appears, one or more zones are not secured. To secure the system, close all doors and windows and cease all motion in areas covered by motion detectors.
Hello, Just bought the DSC 832 (PC5010), in the setup manual it makes reference to the installer's code and Master code. The installer's code is given in the manual, but I can't find anywhere what the initial master code is set to. Is there a way to reset master code on dsc 1832 2 Answers I have a DSC 1832 security system at my home but never got the master code from the installer who I have now lost touch with. I need to set the clock on my 5501 keypad and it appears that requires the master code.

Alternate Arming Methods Away Arming:
Arming the system in the Away mode will have all interior zones and perimeter zones active. If motion is detected in the interior zones, or if one of the perimeter zones is violated, the alarm sequence will begin. To arm in the Away mode, enter your [User code] and exit the premises through a designated Exit/Entry door. The system will recognize that occupants have left the premises. Once the exit delay expires, the system will be fully armed.
Audible Exit Fault:
In an attempt to reduce false alarms, the Audible Exit Fault is designed to notify you of an improper exit when arming the system in the Away mode. In the event that you fail to exit the premises during the allotted exit delay period, or if you do not securely close the Exit/Entry door, the system will notify you that it was improperly armed in two ways: the keypad will emit one continuous beep and the bell or siren will sound. If this occurs, you must re-enter the premises, enter your [User code] to disarm the system, and then follow the arming procedure again, making sure to exit the premises in the proper fashion. Your installer will tell you if the Audible Exit Fault has been enabled on your system.
Stay Arming:
This feature, if enabled by your installer, will allow you to arm the perimeter zones while leaving the interior zones inactive so that you can remain on the premises while the system is armed. When you enter your [User code] to arm the system and do not exit the premises through a designated Exit/ Entry door, the system will arm in the Stay mode, automatically bypassing the interior zones.
The interior zones can be reactivated at any time by entering [*] [1] at any keypad. If you reactivate the interior zones, be sure to only inhabit areas not covered by motion detectors. To access areas protected by motion sensors, you must enter your [User code] and disarm the system.
Arming Without Entry Delay:
If you wish to arm your system without the entry delay, enter [*] [9] then your [User code]. The Armed light will flash as a reminder that the system is armed and has no entry delay. An entry through any zone programmed as a delay zone will create an instant alarm.
Quick Arm:
When the Quick Arm feature is enabled, the system may be armed by simply pressing [*] [0]instead of your User code. Please note that pressing [*] [0] will only allow you to arm the system; to disarm; you must enter a valid [User code]. Your installer will inform you if the Quick Arm feature has been enabled on your system.
Quick Exit:
When the Quick Exit feature is enabled, pressing [*] [0] while the system is armed will provide a two minute window for you to exit the premises. During this time, you may only open and close the designated Entry/Exit door once. Once the door is closed, the panel will end the two minute quick exit delay. If the door is opened again, or if the door is not closed after two minutes, or if another zone is opened, the panel will begin the entry delay. Your installer will inform you if the Quick Exit feature has been enabled on your system.
Disarming from an LED Keypad:
Enter the premises through a designated Exit/Entry door; entering by any other door will sound an immediate alarm. As soon as the Exit/Entry door is opened, the keypad will beep to indicate that the system should be disarmed. Go to the keypad and enter your [User code]. If an error is made entering the code, enter your code again. As soon as the correct code is entered, the Armed light will go out and the keypad will stop beeping. The correct access code must be entered before the entry delay period expires. If a valid User code is not entered during this time, the system will go into alarm. The entry delay time may be changed by your installer.
If an alarm occurred while the system was armed, the Memory light and the zone light corresponding to the zone which caused the alarm will flash for 30 seconds. After the 30 second period, the Memory light and zone light will stop flashing and the panel will return to the Ready state. Pressing the [#] key during the 30 second period will cancel the alarm memory display. To view other alarms, press [*] [3].
If a trouble was detected when the panel is disarmed, the Trouble light will turn ON. Please note that troubles will not display while the system is in the Alarm Memory Display mode.

Zone Bypassing:
The zone bypassing function is used when access is needed to part of the protected area while the system is armed. Zones which are temporarily out of service due to damaged wiring or contacts may be bypassed to allow system arming until repairs can be made. Bypassed zones will not cause an alarm. Zones cannot be bypassed once the system is armed. Bypassed zones are automatically cancelled each time the system is disarmed and must be reapplied before the next arming.
NOTE: For security reasons, your installer may program the system to prevent you from bypassing certain zones. Bypassing zones reduces your security protection. If you are bypassing a zone due to damaged wiring or contacts, please call a service technician immediately so that the problem can be resolved and your system returned to proper working order. Do not unintentionally bypass zones when you arm your system.
To bypass zones from an LED keypad:
Start with the system in the Ready state. Enter [*] [1] [Zone number (s) to be bypassed].
Enter the zone number (s) as a double digit from (01 to 32). As each zone is bypassed, the corresponding zone light will turn ON. If a zone is bypassed by mistake, press that zone number again and the zone light will turn OFF, indicating that the zone is not bypassed.

Fire Alarm Operation
On a fire alarm, the bell or siren will pulse ON and OFF. The transmission of the alarm to the central station is delayed for 30 seconds. If the alarm is not cleared within the 30 second delay, it will then be transmitted to the central station.
To Silence Alarm:
To silence the bell or siren, press the [#] key. If the alarm is silenced and the smoke detector is not reset, the alarm will resound after 90 seconds.
Resetting Smoke Detectors:
Once the smoke detector is reset, if it still detects smoke, the alarm sequence will resound as described above. If there is no smoke, the system will return to normal.

Full System Test:
We recommend that you test your system weekly. Should the system fail to function properly, call your installation company immediately for service.
NOTE: Perform system tests at off-peak hours.

2. Begin with the system in the Ready state.
3. Perform a Bell/Battery test by pressing [*] [6] [Master Code] [4]. The bell and keypad buzzer will sound for two seconds and all keypad lights will turn ON.

From an LED keypad, observe the zone light turn ON when the zone is activated. The zone light will turn OFF when the system restores to normal (i.e. door or window closed).

NOTE: Some features described above will not be functional unless enabled by your installer.
Please ensure that your installer has advised you which features are functional on your system.

Viewing Trouble Conditions:
The control panel continuously monitors a number of possible trouble conditions. If one of these trouble conditions occurs, the keypad will beep twice every 10 seconds until you press any key on the keypad.
To view troubles from an LED Keypad:
A trouble will be indicated by the Trouble light (or System light on a PC1555RKZ keypad) which will remain ON until the trouble condition is cleared. If you cannot determine the cause of the trouble condition, contact your installer for assistance.
To view the type of trouble condition, press [*][2]. One or more zone lights will turn ON, indicating the various trouble conditions:

Tips and Advice for Older Systems
The DSC 832 has been used for DIY alarm systems and professional installations for years. Its great features, ease of programming and reasonable price made it a favorite of many in the alarm business.
The DSC Power 832 security system is no longer in production, although systems are still available from several vendors. The panel will remain relevant for years to come, due to the sheer number that have been installed.
People often inherit a DSC 832 as part of an existing home security system when they buy a house. If you happen to be one of these people, the tips below can help you get the system up and running. With the alarm working, you may be able to avoid or postpone replacing the panel.
If your DSC system isn't in such good shape, I'll give you some thoughts on that at the bottom of this page.

Replacing the Alarm System Battery
Have you been awakened by your DSC alarm beeping in the middle of the night? If so, a bad battery is the most likely cause.

A dead or dying backup battery is the most common problem found with any security system, and the DSC Power 832 is no exception.
Replacing an alarm panel battery is an easy do-it-yourself task, even for a beginner. For detailed steps on how to do it, see this page on DIY Alarm System Battery Replacement.
Most DSC 832 alarm panels will have the 12-volt, 4 amp/hour (4 AH) size battery in place. This is the smaller of the two standard types used for alarm panels.
If you have to replace your battery, I advise getting the larger12-volt / 7 AH unit. It will give you more run-time than the smaller unit in case of a power outage. The DSC 832 enclosure should have plenty of room for the 7AH battery, unless other devices have been installed in it.
Be sure to observe polarity when connecting the new battery. The red, positive terminal connects to the red battery wire, and the black negative terminal goes to the black wire.
Expect to replace the battery in your DSC alarm panel about every 3-5 years or so. Of course, when the battery begins to fail, you’ll be alerted by a beeping DSC keypad. Magical powers in the universe cause this to happen only in the middle of the night, it seems…!
How to Default a DSC 832
If you’ve acquired a DSC Power 832 as part of a home purchase, you may not know the arm/disarm code. You’ll need a valid code to do almost anything with the system, so it’s worth a little effort to figure out what it is.
If the previous owner is known, they’re usually happy to give you a code. Realtors may also have a code to let them show the house.
Installers and homeowners sometimes write the code somewhere on the main panel. Check the outside of the main panel box, as well as inside the lid. If there is a DSC alarm manual or any other paperwork, look for a 4-digit code there.
Check the kitchen drawers for any alarm panel keys. Sometimes, a code is written on a key tag or scrap of paper with the key.
If the code can’t be found, a factory default can often be performed. This will restore the panel programming to original values, including the installerand master codes.

Before attempting to do a default, you should check to see if your DSC panel is locked out. Alarm companies sometimes lock out panels to prevent other companies from reprogramming them.
How to See if Your Panel is Locked Out:
1. Completely power-down the system by disconnecting one battery lead, and unplugging the low-voltage transformer.
2. Power up the panel by plugging in the transformer.
3. Listen carefully: If you hear 8-10 clicks from the panel, it is locked out. If no clicks are heard, the panel is not locked. Reconnect the battery.

If your panel is locked out, your only practical option is to replace it.
If you discover your panel isn't locked out, you can continue with the factory default procedure.

To Do a Hardware Default:
- Disconnect AC power, either at the circuit board terminals or by unplugging the low-voltage transformer.
- Remove one battery lead, doesn’t matter which one.
- Remove all wiring from the “PGM1” and “Zone 1” terminals.
- Use a piece of wire to connect the PGM1 and Zone 1 terminals together.
- Re-connect AC power. (Battery power will NOT default the panel.)
- Go to a keypad, and verify that the Zone 1 light is lit.
- Remove AC power, and reconnect the original wiring.
- Reconnect AC and battery power.
The default master code is 1234, and can now be used to arm and disarm the DSC Power 832 system. Get a copy of the programming manual to complete installer programming of the system, and enter the user codes you prefer.

Checking for Open Zones on DSC 832 Keypads
DSC 832 systems with hardwire contacts can develop problems with doors and windows not “setting up”. This can be caused by sagging frames, loose fitting doors and windows, and missing magnets.
The first step is to find any problem openings and correct them. Close all the exterior doors and windows (as well as the interior garage door), then move to a keypad.
To check for open zones at a DSC Power 832 LED keypad like the PC5508, see if any zone lights are lit. If none are, all is well for the moment. If any are lit, note the zone numbers.
Open zones on a DSC 832 LCD keypad like the LCD5500 will be displayed as text. Just make a note of the zone description. If more than one zone is faulted, press the “<” or “>” keys to scroll through them.

Finding the Open Zones
If a zone list is available, you’ll be able to find the open zone(s) fairly easily.
Just go to each area shown as “open” on the DSC keypad. Look for loose, missing, or mis-aligned magnets and switches.
Also, see if any door or movable portion of a window is very loose in the frame. This can prevent the magnet and switch from lining up, causing an open zone and false alarms.
If there is nozone list, you’ll need to make one. Not to worry, it's really very easy! Here's what to do:
- Have a trusty assistant open and close each door and window in the house, one by one, while you watch the keypad.
- When opened, each door and movable window should show up as a zone light or LCD text display on the keypad.
- Write down which zone light or description appears for each opening.
- Follow the steps above to locate the problem areas.

DSC 832 Options
Your DSC Power 832 should now have a battery in good shape, a fresh set of your own codes, and working door and window contacts.
This alone gives you a good, basic home security system.
The DSC 832 can be customized with zone expanders, enhanced alarm keypads, programming, and other options. Most of this also applies to the successor to the DSC 832, the DSC 1832.

What if your DSC 832 isn't in very good condition?
Depending on what kind of 'wear and tear' your system has been through, consider these points:
- Most newer DSC keypads are backwards-compatible with older models of panel, so you can probably find a replacement for a worn-out keypad. Depending on the age and condition of the rest of the system, this could be a good option
- A new system can easily be had these days for as little as $99, or even free in some cases, provided you go with monitoring. This makes spending money on a very old or worn-out system much less cost effective than it used to be
- If you own a smartphone or other web-enabled device, consider how handy it would be to use it to remotely arm and disarm your system. Many newer systems are designed to be smartphone-compatible from the ground up. If you happen to have (or plan to have) cameras, many systems allow remote live viewing and playback on smart devices
